Letters to my Mother©

__________________________

~WATERCOLOR on an envelope~

I added a picture of my Mom and me,
taken this summer, when she was over
for the wedding of our daughter!

Our daughters call my Mom
"OMA BOOT" (Grandma Boat),
because she lives on a beautiful
(click on) HOUSE BOAT
in the Netherlands, on the river Vecht,
between Utrecht and Amsterdam.

Olga. Thank you for suggesting that I view this very poignant and extraordinary artwork or your envelopes and this exceptional and beautiful photograph of you and "Grandma Boat." Relationships with grandparents are so critical and your mother reflects our comments on the value of graceful aging. I think I wrote the longest response to your comment in the history of AW. I highly respect your values and the love you share with your mother is evident and both of you are so fortunate to have the wonderful relationship that is very evident in this touching and very beautiful portrait. She must eagerly await your letters. I would feel that i am receive a prized piece of your magnificent artwork. You both are very fortunate. I wish more people knew how important it is to love and respect the elderly and the importance of having a "OMA BOOT" in our children's lives. I had a very close relationship with my grandmother and just found a photograph I took with her on the boardwalk when I was seven in Santa Monica, California. I also found a photo of her when she was a child living in Poland. Given the anti-semitism, she left Poland on a boat at seventeen in steerage in the early 1900's and after the terror of the boat trip in storms that almost sunk the boat, she arrived at Ellis Island in New York where immigrants entered and worked in a factory to bring her brother to pay for her brother's trip to escape the horrors before her family was killed in the Holocaust during WWII. She was the love of my life.

Ana Tirolese 13 Sep 2007

This is beautiful. I used to decorate my envelopes for my grandmother, God rest her soul, and she loved it. I heard she used to look forward to my letters and got very excited to see a decorated envelope show up. I don't know if she kept them or not. She passed away in Portugal and I was unable to go to the funeral. My aunt may still have these letters, if she kept them. It sure does make it special. I am glad to see that I am not the only one who did this. I am sure your mother LOVES these treasures from you.

John Swift 13 Sep 2007

Olga: Two lovely ladies and a wonderful photograph taken of them as well. I live right on the shore of Lake Erie, almost but not quite on the water. Although it has flooded where I live and I was surrounded by water a couple of times. BuT I don't think my house will float and I don't wish to find out either. Yet, it must be nice to live as your lovely mother does. Peace and love to you and your mom!!
