Symphonia is applied by Praetorius to an instrument, which he classed with the clavichord, spinet, regal (a small harpsichord, popular in the 18th century, that has the strings set at a slant to the keyboard) and virginal (a smaller, often legless, oblong version of the harpsichord, popular in the 16th and 17th century), but without giving any clue to its distinctive characteristics.
Praetorius was the name of a distinguished family, or possibly two families of musicians in Germany in the 16th and 17th centuries.
