Daughter

A pencil drawing of my daughter Em when she was 5. This is pencil on paper using a Q-tip for subtle shading and the pencil for darker areas. I don't do nearly as many pencil portraits as I use to. I prefer to create the entire image myself from scratch as with the fantasy stuff I do. I can tell stories in that mode/genre. These, while very rewarding, aren't as fun to do.

What a beautiful work Andrew!. Your technique is extraordinary. The fact that you used Q-tip for most of the shadows and only darkening/strong points of the dark... You know I just thought I point other viewers to the place I usually look at while regarding a well done portrait - the mouth. Because, so I've learned and experienced drawing/painting teeth is the most difficult. but look at this work. this is the mouth of a child with some missing/will-soon-be-growing teeth DONE PERFECTLY. not to mention all the other aspects of this portrait. Anywho....:0) Beautiful, great, wonderful and all of those words work! Sasha (Alexandra Louie) Sorry I am not logged in.

Artist Reply: The trick is not to use any lines at all doing the mouth, just shades, and smudges.

You have a soft touch with your pencil. This is so photo like.

Artist Reply: It's mostly done with a Q-tip rubbed on Pencil that's been rubbed on a piece of scrap paper. Only the strong lines and darkest areas are actually done with the pencil itself. Thank you for your comments.
