Oil on canvas 36 x 42”/91 x 107 cm I spent the entire day on the prow of the ship on the lookout for Emperor Penguins while we were crossing the Weddell Sea, Antarctica. It was a blizzard and I was freezing. I finally went to warm up when suddenly the engines stopped; when I went on deck to see what was going on, there was one lone Emperor standing on the ice just in front of the ship. He looked like some wizened elderly priest staring up at our ship, daring us to move one bit closer. What a powerfully moving sight!
