Shiraito no Taki

This photo was the result of too many people being around. There was no room on the path to set up the tripod and shoot and at the main viewing area a TV crew was setting up. My girlfriend and I sat down on a rock beside the river and ate lunch while I considered the scene. It was from that lower perspective that I noticed the pink flowers. I used a 24mm lens and moved in close to get the foreground flowers, the flowing stream and the background falls. The only problem was that a guy in a white T-shirt from the TV crew was visible in the grass. I had to wait until he bent over before I could shoot a couple of frames at four seconds. This photo was entered in a contest in 2001 and was selected to be among 60 images to travel to 12 galleries across Japan for exhibition. It was also included in a book to be sold at the exhibitions and later appeared in the Asahi newspaper because Asahi was the main sponsor. I got paid for the use of the photo in the newspaper. :)

It's very lovely from this perspective. The falls are very striking to look at yet the modest foreground blossoms have an interesting charm of their own, very artistic composition, Peter!

Artist Reply: I liked the combination of the delicate flowers and the flowing and cascading water. Also, from this perspective we see the falls from the level of the flowers.

Terrific work Peter.

Aha! A bit of serendipity for the ever watchful P. Skov! It's a lovely setting. The judge/selectors knew what they were doing!

Artist Reply: In nature I am always trying to see as much as possible. But there is so much beauty that I actually see very little of the whole picture. It is easier at the train stations to watch for beauty. There are always at least a few lovely young ladies that catch my eye.

often you see shots of waterfalls with no compo or perspective but this is fantastic a perfect piece the light, shadow, texture and colour blows me away

Artist Reply: I agree with you about the waterfall photos with no composition. The majority of waterfall pics out there are just straight on views from the front. They are pretty at first but after seeing the same perspective again and again it gets a little old. I always try to find a different perspective for waterfall photos. If possible I try to go beside the cascade, or look down from above, or if possible I get into the water and shoot from just above the surface (tried that once on a hot summer day). I have seen some great shots from behind small waterfalls too. Well, without having to get my feet wet, I am quite pleased with how this photo turned out. Thank you for your encouraging comments. I appreciate your enthusiasm for my photograph.
