Inspired by Michelango's "Doni Tondi" (1507) masterpiece, I did a 21st century interpretation, adding a few elements from other Renaissance masters. (See work and progression) under "Drawings"
I invite you to come to Frederick to view some recent works now on display (Aug 1-31, 2021) at the popular and lively Frederick Coffee Co and Cafe (100 N. East St, Frederick MD).
Here is my ARTIST STATEMENT: "These portraits represent some of my work over the past year. Some are sketches that took under two minutes. My way of attacking the canvas is fast and furious, with the challenge that when using charcoal, graphite and roller-ball pen, I must trust my confidence in line and a steady hand because I cannot erase. Before I began these drawings, I devoted an incredible amount of time to preparation. Inspiration came from 15th Italian Renaissance paintings, the Dutch Golden Age’s Frans Hals, and 19th century sculptures of Honoré Daumier. I found reference material in my personal library of art history books, museum catalogues, and family treasures. These included the inherited collection from my grand-mother, a concert pianist, world traveler and lover of the arts. This “Quick Method” is a new process for me. Before, I could spend weeks on microscopic details and color blends in just one piece. When it was finished, I often was burnt out and frustrated. With this new approach, the pain is gone! I choose whatever drawing tool is close at hand. I grab the implement. I work quick and free and attack the blank canvas. My pen is my sword and the canvas is the victim."
