Self Portrait

B.F.A. in painting from Arizona State University with prior coursework completed at Syracuse University and the Corcoran School of Art.

I prefer working in ink, graphite, pencil as well as acrylic, watercolor, pastel and mixed media.

Artistic inspiration: My chosen subjects range from beautiful women to fish scales and leaves. Favorite artists are Pissarro, Whistler, Sargent, Daumier as well as "Old Masters" Michelangelo and Hals. I marvel at their exact execution of detail, brushwork and technique to portray character, costume, hair and face. As a blues and Rock & Roll musician, fan and collector, I've drawn from photographs in saved Rolling Stones magazine and album covers to pay homage to iconic images of Gregg Allman, Robert Johnson, Jim Morrison, Jimi Henrdrix, and James Brown.

My abstract works incorporate my preference for a strong palette of color, pattern, texture and thick paint combinations.

Earlier work reflects admiration of comic book art. Fan-works of iconic figures incorporate elements of Pop Art, and primary colors.

I've always loved taking pictures, often used as resource material for my Art, Initially captured on disposable cameras and the family Minolta SR-T-101. I switched from film to digital snaps from various cell phones in 2012. I'm drawn to dramatic sky, the play of light and shadow, architecture, reflections, seasons, holidays, foliage, and nature. My work/training in horticulture has enriched my vision to apply aesthetics from art to the beauty of garden plants and flowers.

As a native Washingtonian, favorite haunts are the National Mall, Georgetown, and 14th St shops.. Frederick, Maryland is a lively historic town with a lovely canal steps from my downtown apartment. Martha's Vineyard pictures capture favorite island vistas, stone walls, natural vegetation, architectural delights, ponds, boats and beaches from an island where I have vacationed since childhood and the family has a second home.

Original drawings and paintings are available for purchase as well as limited editions of photographs and Giclée versions of selected paintings. Framed photos and Postcards of favorite Martha's Vineyard photos make popular gifts...
