This is an oil on canvas portrait of my dear cousin Francisco. I completed a series of paintings illustrating and capturing family members leaving in Latin America, We are the grandsons and granddaughters of the Palestinian diaspora. The reason for this work was to illustrate the humanity within the people of Arab ancestry, our contributions, and challenges, but most important, distancing from the stereotypes propagated around the world. (20" x 16")

We are soldiers in the armies of our new homelands, thankful for a home and the peace they’ve offered us. We are from the left, the right, and somewhere in the middle. We are teachers and nurses. Also, farmers, doctors, and engineers. We are artists and poets. But overall, we are the people where Palestine will live forever. We are one family

GELE (Africans' Head Wrap): Vintage and Modern. Gele is the headpiece usually worn by women across Africa for day-to-day activities and on special occasions. I am using “GELE – Vintage and Modern” as a metaphorical image to spotlight changes in African culture in this modern day. The art of tying Gele is disappearing like other traditional skills and many modern African young ladies are disadvantaged. This painting is a homage to my mother and to all the industrious African mothers of the vintage years. They spent quality time with their children while working to support their families. They carried their children on their backs while working on the farms or managing their trading stalls. The artist’s mum carried her child on her back and on her head is the tray of fabrics she sells from door to door to provide for her family.
