As previously stated in another post, the idea board is a good place to network, etc., with other artists.

What I don't like, is that the AW folks in charge are using this format improperly. To wait until there are a specific number of 'thumbs up/thumbs down' before investigating the claim, regarding spam attacks, etc, is preposterous!

We shouldn't have to wait until 500 people complain before something is done.

April 2017 was the first claim re spam ads. It is now Nov 2017, and still we have spam ads. There is no apparent resolve.

Yury Yanin 13 Nov 2017

This time I absolutely agree. It is too formal approach and the AW people seem to understand that.. sometimes. Once they wrote that in some cases they do not wait until the idea gains 100 points. There were problems, which they solved promptly. However there were other ideas, with a lot of voices, which the AW staff was somewhat reluctant to appreciate. For example, a lot of AW members asked to make their galleries more adjustable, to allow them to change order of artworks on their pages, etc. The combined number of voices "up" in all discussions, devoted to this topic, was much more then 100 or even 500, but the AW staff still thinks that actually we do not need such features and prefers not to react. The same with AD's. AW members suggested some measures against spam. May be some of them are too complicated and time consuming, while others can be easily used. No reaction from the staff as far, and spamming is going on... Democracy you know...

Ginger Olansen 13 Nov 2017

I realize it is difficult to catch these spammers. Maybe it might be a good idea to talk to Google or Microsoft to see if they could give you a program that they update regularly to get rid of spam that you could use on your system? It's an idea. I was a programmer for 25 years and an IT manager in that time frame. It concerns me because those people can access our websites, our bios, the web can lead them to more places. If their goal is hacking, the spam opens the door. It worries me in this day and age. Twenty years ago, I would not have worried, but people know more of the net now!

Ranefox 13 Nov 2017

All depends on how the website is created, CMS themes, or coded. There are programs and plugins developed for reducing spam. (CMS themes like WordPress or Joomla, etc,). Akismet is a great free program and can be instslled in CMS themes that will catch spam.

Today it is Sally Lewis, advertising her Hotmail Customer Support. Well, being an expert in some fields myself, I respect experts of all kinds and try never discuss or doubt any professional problem or opinion, which I do not understand, BUT.., In her portfolio Sally Lewis has only one formal picture, advertising her company. Insted of bio - promotional text. If a clever, specialist can not create a program, detecting such evident signs, what for do we need such expensive specialist? Could AW hire an accurate girl, who can evaluate new accounts every day for little money as a part time job? A lot of young people sit inside their computers all days throw, why not to give one of them a chance to earn some money for an easy job? It is much cheaper...

It's gotten to the point where I do not want to browse the artist portfolios or daily uploads because when the first page shows 16 adds, what does that say? To us it is not good when there are over 50 percent ads on one page (16 now). l asked 50 friends to come to the site and stay, 35 of them said "No way too much junk"! Usually, there are always 5 ads on a page, which is just too many ads too! You are loosing people for the ads coming in? What is more important: getting more members or keeping the current ones? I guess neither! I think AW you are forgetting one thing: We we keep you here don't we? I am getting very disappointeand. If we have to wait for another 400 entries here, who wants to bother, many are going else where! These ads are becoming impossible to search for things, just too much junk! It is beyond being bad. Once day a week should be dedicated to removing the current ads that are on the site and some are on pages higher than 500 on the daily section this means some ads have been there 500 days! Why? They are very hard to ignore.

Ranefox 17 Nov 2017

I feel that our concerns are falling on deaf ears...Perhaps the few of us here need to email directly to [email protected] otherwise, this may never be resolved at the rate this is headed.

@Ginger, I haven't seen the ads you are referring to. To which page (homepage, portfolio, etc) are people opening to find these ads.

Or- go to this page -- http://www.artwanted.com/support/ -- and contact them via email.

Ginger Olansen 17 Nov 2017

I don’t understand why you cannot see them Ranefox!

In"Browse Artist Portfolio" It changed on me they are coming in 1-2 more! Page 1. Took me 25 minutes to put in Word this time total of 19 on first page I see. Do you see them?

Yury Yanin 17 Nov 2017

Yea... they are mostly new members, whom AW staff failed to detect and delete before they showed up. They are easy to be detected though. The majority of them can be detected even by their thumbnails - they have evident formal advertisements instead of the first artwork. Almost all of them place a promotional text into the bio chapter. Some even do not bother to invent numan names. The majority of them are not able to add any artwork or even fresh ad's. That's why I say - it is easy to get rid of them if we follow the simple rule: to start to show a new member after he submits his second artwork.

Ranefox 17 Nov 2017

Great idea, yury... Another option is to send a verification code to email or phone. If code is never validated, or not validated within a short period of time, let's say 2 hours, then account doesn't become active.

@Ginger, I'm not denying that there are ads, I'm not on AW very often, and don't peruse the site much, so I haven't seen the ads.

Slam the [email protected] email with complaints about the ads. Try to offer some kind of alternative if possible. The AW followup to correspondence is painfully slow, so be patient. Perhaps a 2-step method for creating an account would eliminate much of the problem.

Unfortunately, what we've all shared here is apparently failing to garner the attention of the AW board. I would have thought someone would have replied or otherwise commented on this issue. Instead, they want to help everyone by creating a new website that connects all of your web links together into one...they call it 'bounce'. Unfortunately, the term 'bounced' is used when an email can't be located when sending or replying to a message, hence the bounce effect. I think they have 'bounced' foul and out of play by not responding to this ad issue. So far, they still watch from sidelines to see how many votes this concern raises before they are willing to do anything other than to tell us that more votes will get their attention. Catch 22 here. People will stop using this site if their needs aren't met.... The idea board should be split into 2 categories, ideas, etc. and complaints, bugs, concerns, etc. That way, ideas can be voted on to raise interest, and complaints can be investigated and resolved in a timely matter.

ArtWanted.com Staff 18 Nov 2017

We wanted to chime into this conversation again and share our thoughts. We appreciate those that are commenting on the ideas board, this is why it was created. The more voices that chime in, the more important the issue is, and the higher the priority it will be given by our staff and programmers to. We also want to mention that if you are seeing a bug or an error or need help or want to report a specific issue, it's better to submit a support ticket to us to be instantly seen.

Now on to the topic of junk/spam accounts...

We first want to say that ArtWanted is not being hacked, or compromised in any way. These are real people, creating real accounts, with real e-mail addresses. There is not a filter (or two step validation) that will stop this from happening, as they could easily be real artists wanting to join ArtWanted. The problem happens is when these new accounts upload images with links to other website or are commercial in nature. This is what we want to reduce or eliminate from happening.

As mentioned on an earlier comment, there are changes to the programming of the website that can be done to reduce the number of spam accounts or images that are posted on the website. These changes take time and resources and pull us off from other updates we are making to ArtWanted, so this is why we have the idea board, so we get a better feel for what is important to our members.

Ignoring point values of the idea for a minute, this is a hot topic right now for you that are reading this post and we do think it's important. Your conversations are not falling on deaf ears.

This week we will be putting together a plan to reduce spam on ArtWanted, but from a technology side and from a personal review side of things. We appreciate your feedback/comments and we will be posting an update to this idea within the next week with some ideas we have to help with the problem. Keep your feedback coming!

Ginger Olansen 21 Nov 2017

Thanks, Artwanted Staff glad you chimed in. If there is anything I can do to help like look for ads let me know! I am retired and have the time over the next 6 weeks then my gallery starts moving again! Just you attention here made us all feel better. Thank you for all your time and great efforts, we really do appreciate you even if you don't think so at times!

Al Budarin that comment "ugly" is terrible. I never saw it! They should be removed! We are here to encourage all, make friends and enjoy each other’s work.

ArtWanted.com Staff 25 Nov 2017

Over the last week we have reviewed the comments from everyone on this idea and the spam accounts that are getting created. We have put together a plan to help greatly reduce the spam/commercial accounts that are being created.

Spam Reduction Plan:
1. Review all new accounts daily to remove commercial/spam accounts.
2. Automatically flag an account for staff review anytime they put a 3rd party URL in their bio or image description.
3. Add a new “Report to Staff” feature, so any spam image or account can be manually reported by anyone for our staff to review.

We have already started to implement this plan and it should be completed within the next few weeks.

Ginger Olansen 28 Nov 2017

I think this will really help. Waiting to see if it does. Great ideas!

Al Budarin 28 Nov 2017

Absolutely,I very much agree

Yury Yanin 04 Dec 2017

Today's spam is called "Checkmate" (cash loans). Uploaded 5 hours ago. No even pretence for a name of artist or anything...

Ginger Olansen 05 Dec 2017

Its amazing what these people can do with "Checkmate" ! Thanks Yury for all your help and input. Its a difficult situation getting rid of it all. If it was easy, they would not be there!
