Even though there was a sturdy fence between me and this veteran buffalo, the approach was very slow and always with an eye alert to any possible disturbance. This is one of the herd at Meritt Bois D'Arc Ranch & Event Center on the northwest edge of Denton, Texas. The resident owners love for people to visit but always caution going near the fence or making any sudden moves.

When I lived in Topeka, I was told that they had a huge male bison on display in their zoo (years ago). And when he finally died, they did an autopsy and found over 20 bullets lodged in this animals bones and muscles. The thought was that passersby would shoot him as he stood on display...but he kept living for many years despite the bullets and hate. I see your (nice) photo of this magnificent animal and I'm glad they are still around.

Artist Reply: thanks very much for sharing that history; I am very privileged to live close driving distance to two herds!
