War at Home

The referenced place in this painting is a building on the main throghfare, Magnolia Avenue in the mountain town of Buena Vista. It's a gentle observation about a terrible subject, war and not intended to offend. Bedford, Virginia is near and the people of this area have been noted to respond with disporportionate sacrifice in the nation's conflicts despite suffering a want of its economic bounty. The spirit that prompted in our present time and this current conflict, the owner of a long closed business place, to post a "Support our Troops" poster in its window comments silently to this; and the thought is echoed by the stong light and shadows across the building's facade and the rotting snow. It's winter and the painting is absent of any hint of spring or note of youth; but the bare tree and the old man attest to life and an enduring spirit. If you've read this far you can look across at the painting now & see a luminosity of hope not apparent in the whole before. This painting is on a covered panel 30 x 24 inches & is currently part of a show at "An Artist's View" gallery Buena Vista, Va.
