Burrowing owls are the only owls in North America that live in the ground. They have lost much habitat with the demise of black-tailed prairie dogs. This one is living right next to a narrow county road with undeveloped land surrounding in southeast Dallas County. I learned of it through local birding connections.

I like this owl's fierce determined, all-knowing look. I also like how the designs of the owl's head, breast, and feathers look almost the same as the gravel that the owl is standing on.
