“HAPPY BIRTHDAY, NIRA!!!” I wrote at length in the adjoining painting, “HAPPY BIRTHDAY, LILLIAN!!!” about cats and how painting them fits into the same category with similar features but perhaps more difficulties than “portrait painting” human people. For once, I think that what I said there sufficiently applies to this painting of two of cats and so I direct you to the next painting on your right for that discussion. (I’m sure that somebody like Anneke -- indeed, no such person exists! -- is going to comment to the effect that “double your pleasure,” fun, etc., should mean double the treatment. Or the like.) I do want to mention this as an example of how Anneke can create an excellent painting with only two cats and some, frankly, boring water and a bit of junky and stained dock. Besides the two cats, then, nothing there is of much interest or beauty: all basically is designed not to draw attention away from the serious and important subject! BUT if you delve into the water you may notice a couple features significant to the painting’s composition. First that the dull water is made to disappear into infinity by the old disappearing railroad track technique: two pathways gradually slant toward each other toward infinity. In this case the “tracks” are constructed by uneven horizontal rectangles that become nearer each other the higher they become on the canvas and the further away they carry our view -- if we allow ourselves to get very sidetracked on them. Before they disappear, the dark one more or less overcomes the lighter and they basically disappear. I’ve tried to experiment myself, and as nearly as I can tell objectively, my focus will quickly travel up the lighter right side into the nothingness (dull and unattractive dark gray) and then quite immediately return on the left, darker side. I have only a couple more traits to point out. On the right, lighter side, I was pleased to find, I think, a barely discernable reflection of a round, full, moon. You’ll have to look quite specifically to find it, I think. Some people might interpret that the two quite similarly colored and twinish looking cats may have met under a full moon for some reason other than discussion mice habits and habitats. The other interesting touch, I think, is clearer. Bright light, evidently moonlight, outlines the back of the 2-cat unit and also is repeated in the underside coloring of the left-hand cat. The fur coloring of the right cat’s back also is lighter, repeating the direction of the lighter reflection in the water, while the left-hand cat has a much darker back area dark -- say twice that of the right-hand cat. So, I went this far in pointing out what may seem to some as useless information. But I believe that utilizing such details is highly responsible for the difference between an excellent representational painting and, at the extreme, painting by numbers. "HAPPY BIRTHDAY NIRA!!!"
