Photographed in October, 2007 in Westwood Park, West Los Angeles, CA..I just learned from Mark Meahl at garden-view.com that this is Chorisia speciosa, commonly called Silk Floss Tree. They are native of Brazil and Argentina and surely one of the most impressive trees to be found. The appearance of the blooms reportedly changes with age. The ones in the park are probably over 40' tall. The floss name has to do with the fibrous look of the seeds that emerge from the large pods.
