Susan Butcher was the well known Ididerod champ a few consecutive years. She was the only woman to win the Ididerod. At the time I took this photo, Susan Butcher was in a Seattle, WA hospital fighting for her life, and her husband was with her. I am sad to say that she lost her battle with cancer.

Oh my! I was in Anchorage/Eagle River for a bit over three years 84-about 88 when Susan Butcher won the Ididerod. The fav' bar saying amongst women was 'Alaska where men are men and women win the Ididerod!" it was a great time. I am so sorry to learn of her passing. Thanks for the photo and bringing back the memories....Sara Deutsch 21 May 2008

Oh how sad about Susan! I am sure she gave her all fighting cancer; and to have won the Ididerod....such an incredibly strong women! My daughter is very familiar with the "race"; her passion began after watching the movie "Balto". Is Balto back in Alaska yet? Great action shot of the training...and in remembrance of such a remarkable lady!gregg dutcher 21 May 2008
