Ohio River Driftwood

I took this picture on the Ohio River at Cave-In-Rock, Illinois. I found the piece of drift wood interesting because of the rather substantial rope attached to it and that it appears to be a full size tree. I speculate that it was used as mooring for a barge or large boat which was perhaps swept away by a storm, taking the dead tree with it.

Cave-In-Rock is only a few miles up river from the confluence of the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers at Cairo, Illinois. The river flows some 980 miles from it's beginning at Pittsburgh to it's mouth at the Mississippi River and provides a vital commercial link for industrial and agricultural interests in the Midwest. Barges on the river carry products such as coal, steel, crops, chemicals, and petroleum.
