The Pomegranate “Rimon” is one of the seven kinds the land of Israel is blessed with, cited in Deuteronomy 8:8 “ A land of wheat, and barley, and vines, and fig trees, and POMEGRANATES: a land of olive oil, and honey”. The juicy pomegranate has hundreds of seeds, possibly as many as 613 — the number of "mitzvoth" (commandments) given to the Jewish people in the five first books of the Bible. The pomegranate represents abundance; fertility, prosperity, happiness and good deeds. It is a tradition to eat pomegranates during the Jewish New Year (Rosh Hashannah) for the New Year to be as full and sweet as a pomegranate. After the pomegranate is eaten, we ask that “our merits be as numerous as the pomegranate seeds.”
