Why Yes I Do Live Around Here

Some time back my Uncle James and his life-long friend Ian regaled us with the tale of the time they came upon a Mermaid... Laugh as we might at the outlandish tale, they never faltered nor added an embellishment to their story. And even when each was taken aside from the other, neither man ever lessened his enthusiasm nor even hinted at any chicanery in the telling. Since both men had been sailors (Officers Actually) for Her Majesty and served Her in the Caribbean as "Spooks" for many years this story had always been a particular favorite of mine. Again that madcap duo has inspired another of my pictures taken from one of my fondest memories - The piece has several variations on its title - "Why Yes Sailor, I Do Live Around Here" "Why Yes Sir James, I Do Live Around Here - Don't You Remember?" and "Ian! You Never Call Me Anymore" :0)

magical story and magical art

Artist Reply: Yeah Cyn, old Uncle James and his buddy Ian sure had the stories - some of them were actually true!! They were the craftiest pair I've ever known - they've inspired a number of paintings ~8-)

I bet your Uncle James and his friend Ian would have never come home from the sea if the had ran into this mermaid..............she is lovely.......love the 40's twist you gave her..............

Artist Reply: Well Mayme, maybe that's why the two of them never grew up - they were always hanging out down at the lagoon looking longingly out to sea... who can say - yeah, I miss those old more cleaver and somewhat innocent cheesecake illies - they were a hoot - I'm on a personal campaign to repopularize them - wish me luck :0)

merle cruser 02 Aug 2007

What a wonderful story and storyteller and story painter!! Fantastic!!!!

Artist Reply: That's the very same thing my mom said to me before returning to her home under the sea - it's not what you think Merle - she was an alien not a mermaid - go figure - anyway, thanks for about the best compliment I've had on one of my pics :0)

Clare Rowley 01 Aug 2007

A very funny story Chas and your mermaid is a good and very cute tribute to that tale! Well done!

She may be prunny but she's still hot!

Artist Reply: What the average bugger on the street does know about mermaids is that one fully grown weighs in somewhere around 400 pounds or more. Yeah, they're soft and girly up top, but in their nethers they're all muscle - 'bout eight or nine feet long with the tail... And ya got to wax 'em down every so often to keep their skin supple - 'course the works not too hard for the right man, eh Ted? 8-P

Jerry 01 Aug 2007

Very colorful expression!

Artist Reply: Yeah Jerry, those mermaids are truly the chickens of the sea - if we ever learn their secret for keeping their skin from getting prunny in the sea water all the time, we make a fortune, eh? :0)

you know this contains so much charm, it actually is saturated in times past of the 40's advertising and pin up girls. an incredible work chas, really this one just excel above all. its gonna be my pic of the day without a doubt... and tell Ian- mermaids still can give you a rash- my grandpa told me... and I think grandma flashed him that eye of a woman who knows where her husbands been.... cough cough

Artist Reply: Swabbies know all about rashes of the sea fer sure - sadly Ian shuffled off the mortal coil some time back, but Uncle Jim is still going strong - he was recently married for the seventh or eighth time and he's down in El Caribe at a little place we keep down that way - Yeah, I love that old forties and fifties stuff - It was all we had for company out at the station I grew up on - used to go on dates with the Roos and you haven't lived until you've learned to kiss with a wombat - they often take it too seriously, though. Once we guys were old enough to go to town on our own we'd ride our old Indian in on Saturday night - Indian Motorcycle in case you're confused - anyway G'day and thanks for the chat-up as always KL ~8-)
Artist Reply: P.S. Kerry I'd have that cough looked after - never know where those things can lead, eh? :0)
