Israel remembers...

Israel marks today Holocaust Memorial Day. The photo was taken in Jerusalem (Israel) in The Hall of Names at Yad Vashem, which is the Jewish People's memorial to each and every Jew who perished in the Holocaust - a place where they may be commemorated for generations to come. The main circular hall houses the extensive collection of Pages of Testimony - short biographies of each Holocaust victim. Over two million Pages are stored in the circular repository around the outer edge of the Hall, with room for six million in all. The ceiling of the Hall is composed of a ten-meter high cone reaching skywards, displaying 600 photographs and fragments of Pages of Testimony. This exhibit represents a fraction of the murdered six million men, women and children from the diverse Jewish world destroyed by the Nazis and their accomplices.

Along with others who never knew this particular place existed, I am awed. If I knew all of their names, I would unfortunately find thirty-one pictures of my past family members among the millions posted. Thanks for posting this shot. It really gives one the feeling that it goes on and on and on... R

My heart breaks looking at the beautiful souls that perished in the darkest time in human history. What a beautiful testament and tribute to a time that must be remembered to prevent future tragedys on such a massive scale. The famous philosopher Ramayana said," if we don't understand history, we are compelled to repeat it." Unfortuantaly, there are too many wars and hate crimes that still exist despite all the 600 very poignant memories on the walls of the hall of names. This is an incredibly powerful photograph and one would hope that people would have learned from this global tragedy. It is so sad that we continue to have wars and hate crimes taking the lives of the innocent, particularly when I look at the child victims. It is important to continue to educate the world about the hideous crimes of the Nazis and their associates by having this yearly memorial. No words can describe the sorrow of such senseless evil that continues to destroy human life and hope. I would also like to add to your wall another survivor of the Holocaust who did not perish then, but proved himself to a hero by saving the lives of his students during the Virginia Tech tragedy. Liviu Librescu died a hero's death with bitter irony on Israel's Holocasut Remembrance day. He blocked the door to his classroom to save the lives of many young students who are forever indebted to his heroics. I imagine so many of the people in your very touching photo were also wonderful brave souls and and like Librescu their spirits will live on in our hearts to give us the courage to to fight for the return of world harmony and peace. Thank you for sharing these profound images, a beautiful tribute to these courageous victims.

What a powerful piece. It's so sad that it ever happened and that things like that continue to happen. Learning about the Holocaust in school was something that touched me deeply and has forever stuck with me.

Very moving Lili; sadly I don't think the human race has moved on from those dark days. There are still huge global problems, World Peace & Global harmony are still a long way off. We should never forget; but we should certainly learn. Hate doesn't do any of us any good.

Elizabeth Levi has said it all, Thank you for this Lili, it is indeed very important to remember and take time to reflect on the enourmisity of those who suffered and lost their lives, this brilliant photo shows but a few, but is so powerfull!

Elizabeth Levi 16 Apr 2007

THis is so important - thank you for posting this. Still... even with things like this the deniers will remain, and grow in number now that holocaust survivers are dying off. Sadly, it seems that humans can never learn anything... look at Darfur. Who needs Satan when people can be so evil?

Howard Leibowitz 16 Apr 2007
