Secret Beauty

The time I spent studying the landscapes of the Ara River in Saitama Japan took me to a lot of beautiful places that were tucked away deep in the mountains, down rugged one-lane dirt roads that were often scattered with large rocks broken loose from the steep cliffs. While checking out such a road in order to find views of a tributary river, I came across this scene. At the time I thought I had found the most beautiful view in Saitama. But since then I have come back twice in different weather and during a different season and this place has not looked the same.

Excellent shot! These bright colors! What a mood!

Artist Reply: Yes, it is really amazing how the right time of day, the right season, and the right weather can come together to make a scene outstanding. Thank you Claudia.

You really are great at capturing shots of places people often miss by not looking... This is beautiful, Peter..:))

Artist Reply: Thank you, Blue. I have noticed it is common for photographers to gather at certain locations in order to attempt to capture a scene that was made famous by some other photographer. Especially here in Japan, where they follow the Asian tradition of learning to immitate the master, people flock to certain locations at certain times of the year at a certain time of day. I'm not into standing shoulder to shoulder with 20 plus people. So, I purposely try to find places that are still beautiful but not crowded. Best of all is when no one is there.

How very lovely!

Oh, this is beautiful! The colors and the lighting are fantastic. Great exposure.

Artist Reply: Getting the exposure right was difficult. I metred off the trees and the rocks and checked other points as well. I didn't bracket. I just went with what I figured was right and it worked. Sometimes I amaze myself. But there are plenty of screw-ups to keep my ego from becoming over-inflated.

Peter, your perfect photo has given me the pleasure of feeling and smelling the cool green mystery of this enchanted place!

Artist Reply: Yes, Betty, there was such a cool and fresh smell in the air. I am glad you sensed that from my photo. I owe you an email too. I will reply just not yet.

Just perfect, Peter. The deep dark cavern draws the eye in to the refreshing water. I really like the brilliant yet soft green color of the top tree in contrast to the black of the cavern. You have excellant composition on this one, my friend. Makes me think I gotta see Japan someday.

Artist Reply: Wow, thank you for the detailed comment. And if you plan to come over, let me know and I can give you some hints about what to see and what to expect.

Lawrence Hickman 21 Jan 2007

outstanding and awsome work well composed

Artist Reply: Thanks, Lawrence. I was hoping to get the angle of the water a little more from the left but I couldn't. I think some leaves or maybe even wires came into the photo when I moved more left. Anyway, this was the best I could do.
