Cuckoo Pint

This wonderful plant grows in English hedgerows and flowers in April and May. The greenish-white hood partially shrouds the flower parts. In the autumn it produces bright red poisonous berries. In Victorian times starch was made from its ground up roots but laundrymaids hands suffered from a severe form of dermatis after using it. It has many other names including Starchwort and Lords-and-Ladies.
