Woman in cangaço

The ingression of the woman in cangaço happened in 1930, Maria Déia, the Maria Bonita (Pretty Maria), become the greatest friend of Lampião. Maria Bonita was broth up in the small farm of her father, in the region of Jeremoabo, Bahia. She was daughter of Jose Felipe de Oliveira and Maria Joaquina Déia. She had 11 brothers. At 18 she married Jose de Neném, a young man of good customs, trader and shoemaker. Maria and Neném did not understand themselves well and fought a lot. The farm was in the border between Bahia and Sergipe, where Lampião passed many times. Her parents considered Lampião a great man. It was Marias mother that told Lampião that her daughter had a great admiration for him. One day, in 1931, Maria came to the farm when Lampião was there and the cangaceiro felt in love to the first sight. When the gang went way, Lampião took Maria Bonita, with the assent and the blessings of her mother. Lampião was almost 33 and Maria a little more than 20. She had the physical type of the sertaneja woman: small, dark eyes and hair and light brown skin. She was called " Mrs.Maria" by the gang, when they talked directly to her. Maria Bonita gave birth to a girl named Maria Expedita in 1932, that was delivered by her parents to a reliable coiteiro (hider) in Sergipe. Picture: (Female Warrior), 95cm of width by 60 of height.
