jimmy best

20"x 22" acrylic on canvas. the basic concept behind the "product" series is that i, and my art, are a product of my experience. this series is more for therapy, i wish to face some issues that still trouble me instead of letting them eat me up from the inside, i want to grow, and i want to heal.... i want to be as honest and open as possible, and i feel the best way for me to ensure that i stay true to that is to take away the fact that it is me, and take on a third person perspective, hence jimmy best, different name, but it is me. this is the story of jimmy best... this piece a simple self portrait, the listing of fears in his shadow is meant to show that these fears are within him, some are still hard to see, showing his reluctance to share, the fact that he is facing away from the list is meant to be positive, jimmy is trying to move past his fears. the title "jimmy best" comes from the graffitti of SAMO aka Jean -Michel Basquiat, "jimmy best, on his back to the suckerpunch of his childhood files", i have always interpreted this to mean that jimmy best, due to some trauma that he experienced in his childhood, was still trapped or left unable to move forward with his life, seems to be very fitting.

Derek, this takes my breath away - so powerful - the use of text, the bold black and white you work so well in, the INCREDIBLE sense of 3dimensionality in the portrait - wow - this is just fantastic.

I had seen this picture a few days ago and wanted to come back and tell you my thoughts. I hope I dont just talk out of line but you have a part in this, I can see whats in you.Its the sad Art that makes you what you are. A true Artist can protray thier feeling to paper. They pen emotions and fear like no other. I give you hands together my friend and Can no wait until your next work.
