"Tommy Atkins" is slang for a soldier in the British Army during the 19th Century. Following the British defeat by the Boers at the Battle of Magersfontein in December 1899, Private Smith of the Black Watch wrote the following poem: Such was the day for our regiment Dread the revenge we will take. Excellent drawing with even the horse looking sad that goes with the poem of incompetence at the top sending soldiers and horses to their doom.
