Out Of The Fog (Marie Kathleen)

"On a gray misty day, the 'Marie Kathleen' seems to appear 'out of the fog' on the Columbia River near Astoria, Oregon.”

Artist comment: "This is one more pastel painting in my 'boats and harbors' series. I really like the mood of the scene. The lowering sky meets the fog and totally obscures the horizon line. The 'Marie Kathleen' is a commercial fishing vessel built in 1966 by Rusa And Bryan and owned by John Moreland Fishing Inc. Her tonnage is 69.0 and she is 57.5 feet long. On toned Canson Mi-Teintes pastel paper, I sketched the subject lightly. With a soft gray pastel, I covered the entire background. Next I started with the blacks. The nets came next, then the grey and white of the boat's upper cabin, and I then painted the blue. The final touches were the nets, lines, and pure white accents. The small bits of red are unexpected spots of color to break the monotone of the painting”
