Artist comment: "This large tugboat seems to be as much a 'shove' boat as she is a 'tug'. With the padded bars in the front, high tower and wide beam, she is well equipped to take on any task required of her. This pastel painting on textured Mi-Teintes paper depicts her on the Columbia River at Astoria, Oregon. I chose to portray a warm morning light and set the tug off against a linear band of forested hills. I painted the whites first, then the gray. The rusty stack and the windows, doors, ropes, and life preservers were next. I finished with the blue trim, white railings, then the flag. I carefully drew the antennae and ladder, the rest of the fine lines and felt quite satisfied that I had captured the 'Willamette Champion'.”
