where to buy masonite board?

I live in Knoxville, TN (downtown at that) and have tried all the major home improvement spots to find "untempered masonite board". First of all, no one knows what the heck I am talking about, then they transfer me to someone who says no one sells it anymore. What gives?

Hi Meghan.

I got you covered! I use "Ampersand" Masonite Gesso "Claybords" exclusively. The are Museum-grade. You take off the celophane and you are ready to "rock 'n roll!" They work fantastic for oils or acrylics. I have even used their other masonites for graphites. They make a great "scratch board" too.

Here is their website:

Ampersand does not sell direct.

I buy most of mine from an art distributor right up the road from you. They are in Charlotte and Boone, NC. The company is called "Cheap Joe's." Here is their website:

You won't be sorry for trying these boards, I guarantee you. Let me know how you make out.

All the best to you!--Denny ;{

Hi Meghan, I buy my masonite at Home Depot - they even cut it for me to the size I want! Good luck! Becky

Hey Meghan, I've used pre-gessoed masonite boards from Hobby Lobby. I am sure Michaels also carries them. These are a good place to go in a pinch, but I would order them from Cheap Joes if you are patient enough to wait on the shipping. I have had to use the small 8 X 10 for the Federal Duck Stamp contest and just got them from Hobby Lobby. I live in Kingsport, TN, just up the road from you. Hey, go Vols!

Even if they are pre-primed guys,I would suggest to always prime them again with gesso...I usually prime mine 3 times.Otherwise it will suck the oil right out of the paint.Just some FYI.
