I disagree...digital painting/art and 3D rendering are two different things, just as photo manipulations are not the same thing as photography.

I think Fractals should also have their own category. There's a lot of people who do them on here, so they kind of end up taking over the 3D rendering category on some days.

I do think that Fine Art should be qualified as 'traditional mediums'. I think sculpture/metalwork should have their own category.

The categories are in some cases rather broad, which contributes to people having difficulty in selecting where to put their work when it's something like photo manipulation art.

im with gayla dont just bunch all of digital art together. if anything it should be expanded to include fractals under there own catagory, there is simply to big of a differance in doing a digital painting and a 3d rendering.

the interactive gallery is cool it seems tho a lot of people have art that shouldnt be in the area as it should be more for .gifs flash, animations things that are interactive.

id say if anything add more catagorys.

I like David's idea of the "Drop-Down" menue once you click on a specific category.

Most people in this day and age have a little bit of computer savy....look at me, I still know how to turn my puter on.

That would really lend to more galleries/categories and more work for AW but it would really help to segregate a lot of mediums, but under one specific genre. Granted it could be confusing at first, but not any more than this site for a "Newbie"

..a few thoughts...

...I agree that by combining some of the genres and mediums isnt fair to any of us...

...Virgin Photos are rare...

...If its born in a computer, then why cannot it be classified as Digital Art, just as combining Fine Arts and Traditional mediums together just because they use traditional tools?

...just random thoughts i'd share.

We really don't plan to change anything, we just like to see a good debate.

ok, just kidding, thanks for your comments. There is no easy way to make everyone happy, so we will continue to pour over the suggestions and come up with new galleries that are sure to cause even more debate. :-)

we see all manner of distinctions in our chosen mediums and we all gavitate towards one area more than others. In Juried art shows I know that painting period is an overall category as is photography. Under that they will separate out oils, acrylics, watercolors. In photography the usually separate the "traditional" approaches to photography and the digital interpretations but that boundary is slim to none because as Sher pointed out there are very few "virgin" photographs anymore. I personally think the manipulation is a matter of degree because even in "painting" the new thing is "mixed media" which can mean anything from paint to collage to mixing oil and acrylic on canvas to mixing drawing, painting and collage. I think it would be helpful to have a mixed media category under painting and under photography too.

Oh Great and Powerful Oz (Andy), we don't intend to keep answering, but we must. That's just the way it is.

I like Ghada's idea. It makes sense.

Any way you look at it,.. a daunting proposition...

I agree 1000% with Gayla:

"...digital painting/art and 3D rendering are two different things, just as photo manipulations are not the same thing as photography.

To expand a bit: If a new category is not possible for Fractals, which are not made with 3D modeling software, they could be brought together with the Digital Art/Painting category: Digital Art/Fractals.
