What do you think?

Do you have a favorite pencil you start with, and which one do you use next? Do you use mechanical pencils or woodcase or something else? Do you use only gaphite or also carbon? Do you use ink also with your graphite? Do you have a fovorite paper? What do you like about someone else's work?

I only use one pencil, a mechanical pencil with 2B lead, and my preferred type of paper is smooth bristol board.

Hey Charles! Thanks for keeping the message board active while ive been gone, my college classes started a few weeks ago and i just recently got a job so i don't have as much time as i used to. Thanks again!!

I usually start with a mechanical pencil with 2B lead also. Then I use maybe 2H, and then go out from there with moodcase pencils. I often of late use ink for my blackest areas. My favorite paper right now is Canson "pure white".

I kinda use whatever the media calls out to me..sounds corny I know..but if I need a nice tight drawing, I use an HB, 2B, 2H, then gradually go softer and finish with an F. I havent used a mechanical pencil in years but have been eyeing some lately..hard to find the good ol' standbys... Now if I m sketching, then I like to use a woodless pencil or a graphite stick..I like the darkness and the broad areas I can cover with it. whoops..better run...I am posting from work and I have to actually look like I am working..haha

The perfect fit for me is: Strathmore Bristle Smooth Heavyweight Paper. For black & White drawings: Raffine ArtSketch 7000 Creative Mark 4B. For Brown DaVinci style sketches: Derwent Colorsoft White Brown Earth.

Um. So this is where I admit the fact that I used a plain ole #2 pencil for all my drawings thus far. Well, there was the charcoal pencil I used on part of the portrait of my mom, but ya know.... The weird thing is, I have a full set of artist pencils! I'm just a creature of habit, and I just tend to stick to one for all of my projects. *shrug* Maybe that will change as I brave more experimentation, yes? Oh, and as for paper, I like Canson 70lb paper for projects that need a nice, smooth surface. And I've come to loooove watercolor paper for projects that require a bit more texture.

Stephanie. Yes. the Art/Graphite pencils can make a world of a difference. As an example shows in my drawing titled "Mother in her Youth & Daughter at Present"...the regular #2 pencil just would never get past med grey...no matter how hard I pressed into the paper...never turned completely black which is many times needed in drawings to get the best contrast....Try them out on a new drawing and tell us how it turns out...and post the results,...I'd bet it will be the difference like going from Alexander Graham Bell's two cans and a string to a cell phone.

Charcoal pencils can be too britle and soft most times. and generally break when trying to apply pressure...i'd highly recomend professional grade Raphine Graphite pencils...

I love woodcase graphite pencils, also woodcase colored pencils. I use Faber-Castell 9000 for graphite, and Faber-Castell Polychromos for colored pencils. Papers, I use C'Grain for graphite and colored pencils, and also paper called Holland Linen for colored pencils. What I like about someone else's drawing? Hmmmm.....I love because they are different with mine, so many various styles.
