Self Portrait

Linear movement and strong color have alsways fascinated me. When drawing a subject, I look for linear rhythm or what I call the "dancing line". I tend to be grounded in realism but my attraction to simple abstract design also influences my work.

I usually work very quickly because I don't sit down to paint until the subject beckons me and I can "see" it in my mind. I don't believe art should be a struggle. Having said that, there are times when the imagined piece and the canvas are at odds. When that happens "mud" often follows and I have to stop and start all over again.

I apply paint in a thin coat to avoid the medium from taking over my work. I find that thick paint leads me to over-mixing and requires too long of a waiting period between sessions.

Born in France into a military family, I have traveled/lived in several European countries. State-side I lived in Maine for many years but now call South Carolina my home. My art training began in a conservative East Coast school and concluded with a BFA from the more liberal University of Nebraska. My work reflects a combination of both schools of thought.

I hope you enjoy my work...Marjorie
