Artist Reply: thank you for the kind comment. I actually used a textured sand-colored pastelboard for this piece. One thing I learned in the process of doing this portrait is that pastelboard is NOT the best choice for pen-and-ink work! A smoother board would have been a better choice ... live and learn.
