Cascading Cliffs

Near the west entrance to Capitol Reef National Park is the beginning of the massive monocline that defines the park. Here is a place that broils for six months and freezes the other six, altogether inhospitable to life of all kinds.

But hidden within is a more benign reality. The river known to John Wesley Powell as the Dirty Devil is now the Fremont, and cuts through the park. It waters orchards and is home to herds of deer as well as petroglyphs that date back millenia.

The monocline of the Waterpocket Fold rises thousands of feet in sheer Wingate sandstone cliffs – structures similar to those at Zion National Park to the southwest. Hikes in the area are exhilirating and awe-inspiring.

It is a truly magnificent place to visit.

Larry- what a great view of the canyon! I agree with Mike, the composition is perfect and the little tree really adds to the whole effect! Great work :) Cathy

Beautiful composition and beautiful shot. I like how you featured the light-colored rock formation and didn't worry about the sky. That little tree is a real bonus. Very nicely done.
