Selby Abbey

The Benedictine Abbey at Selby received its charter from William the Conqueror in 1069 and was visited by many kings. King Henry I was reputedly born here. Although the abbot at the time of the dissolution was a pal of King Henry VIII, the monastery suffered the same fate as the others, apart from the Abbey Church, which survived and came to serve as a parish church for the town of Selby. This photo is of the west end. It was a rotten day and I must go back in better weather.
