The Marabou Stork, at first glance I was repulsed by this bird, but curious at the same time, I thought he must be sick but no this is the natural look of this bird. I am sure glad he is not delivering any babies! The marabou stork is one of the largest flying birds in the world, and has a wingspan close to 2.9 metres. They will eat insects, fish and small animals, but prefer to feed from animal carcasses when it can. Their very sharp beak is used to rip pieces from a carcass, which will often be shared with other storks as well as other scavengers. The marabou stork has evolved its bald head so that it can reach inside carcasses without having to worry about getting its feathers covered in blood and gore. Native throughout tropical africa, they can grow to 5 feet in height and can live up to 25yrs. Taken at the GVZ, Aldergrove, B.C.
