The Gendarme

Sunset from the lodge between Hotakadake and Karasawadake is often a spectacle worth waiting for. In summer the clouds drift right over the peaks and enshroud the lodge as sunset approaches. If you climb up too high you might only glimpse the final presentation of light. But having been there twice in mid-August I learned that it is best just to stay put at the viewing deck behind the lodge and wait. In those final breathtaking moments when the sun casts the glow of hot embers through the clouds and warms the rocks to near molten luminescence that's when the patient ones who waited below the high summits are rewarded. In 2006 I came down from cloud-covered Karasawadake just in time to see the light burn and fade before an audience of captive spectators. In 2007 I held my position with everyone else and I was rewarded graciously. Part of Project: Sanmyaku

Spectacular, Peter! I might have called it "And God Appeared In a Cloud"

Artist Reply: Yes, except which is God: the clouds or the rocks?
