Clobbering Koblenz

The picture is of a Lancaster 1 ME844 LS-C of No15 Sqdn being flown over Koblenz by flying officer J.Collins and crew. The Lancaster is not a special tonne up Lancaster and the mission not extraordinary – this being deliberate. I wanted to do a picture of a stock Lancaster on yet another raid. The story goes that an Allied bomber crew was shot down over Mainz after bombing Koblenz. The citizens of the city hung the crew from the ancient bridge over the Rhine River there. Word got back to the Allies of the event, and afterwards bomber crews flying mission in the area would save a portion of their bomb load and divert over Mainz to avenge the hangings.
