Green-headed cone flowers bloom from July to September. Their name comes from the yellow ray flowers that surround a green disk. As the disc flowers mature, they turn brown, making identification harder. When the ray flowers first open they extend outward, producing a three inch diameter flower; but as they mature they droop downward, making their diameter appear smaller. The flower's other name "Autumn Sun" is derived from the German name "Herbstsonne". The photo was taken at the Tuileries gardens in Paris on October 12, 2007.
