This is a painting of the ruins of Roscommon Abbey in County Roscommon, Ireland. All over Ireland one comes across the ruins of castles and monasteries from another time. Often they are found in the middle of no where, in the middle of a field. Very majestic and a bit sad. Oil on canvas, size 8x10

This happened all over Britain during "The Dissolution" when many great monasteries and abbeys were stripped of their roofs - and all their valuables - and left to ruin. I didn't know that it happened in Ireland too but it looks as though it might have. Very sad as you say. Look up Fountains Abbey site to see the effect. I won't mention the names of the vandals involved but they were very (in)famous people in our history. The sadness can be felt in this painting.Madeleine Weber 28 Apr 2008

very poetic image and beautifully created. love the way the grass and clouds have so much motion and the structure is solidly in the ground. It's as if it is resisting the movement all around it.Anneke Hut 13 Feb 2008
Seeing this wonderful landscape and ruin, I would love to visit Ireland one day!
