Great Blue Heron on Green

┬ęDelores J. Knowles 2008-- The Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias) is, to me, the most beautiful of the large waders. Sometimes he is mistakenly referred to as a Gray Heron as his feathers range from gray to dark blue and everything in between. He's normally a very placid bird and will stand for hours in one spot, usually at the edge of a pond or lake, waiting patiently for dinner to wander by. He flies with his neck folded, unlike the cranes who extend their necks when flying. An adult stands about four feet tall and he looks every inch the king of the pond. Photographed in Lake County, Florida.
