Isons (Madona de la cintura)

cm 28x21, mixed media on disposable textile, 2007. "Isons" is the name of Isonzo river in the local dialect (bisiaco) spoken along the riversides. "Madona de la cintura" is the name of a statue kept in the main church of S. Pier d'Isonzo (Gorizia) in North-Eastern Italy. My illustration is a sort of icon about a legend related to the Belt's Madonna, protecting pregnant women. It is told that during the First World War, the faithfuls decided to move it to the nearby village (along the river Isonzo) to preserve it from the imminent bombing. Half way of the journey on a gig, the horse became restive and refused to go further. So the statue was brought back to the church of S. Pier d'Isonzo. It was a good choice because the nearby village was bombed and the Belt's Madonna escaped its destruction! MY BEST WISHES OF MERRY CHRISTMAS WITH THIS MEMORY OF MY CHILDHOOD!
