Flower Mask

I found this flower in the garden of my friends, Sarah and Zvi Sirota, near Tel-Aviv. It looked to me like a Venice Carnival mask... The Latin name of the flower is Dietes bicolor The genus name "Dietes" is derived from the Greek "dis" which means twice and "etes" which means an associate and is drawing attention to the position of this genus between Moraea and Iris which are its two relatives. The species name "bicolor" means two-coloured. Common names are: African Iris, Peacock Flower. Many thanks to Linda King for providing us the English name!
