White Strings

Shiraito Falls in Shizuoka, Japan is one of Japan's more well-known waterfalls. In fact, there are at least three waterfalls with the name Shiraito, which means White String, however this is the most often photographed of the three. On the day I made this image, the path behind me was chest-to-shoulderblade with people. Also, a TV crew was setting up by the main viewing area, making it really difficult to capture the image I had in mind. Instead I shot this zoomed up view and one other photo which I will post separately.

Beautiful shot Peter, were you able to right up to the falls?

Artist Reply: I think it's not easy to get right up to the falls. On that day a TV crew was setting up for a shoot so I think I couldn't have gone anyway.

Beautiful!--love that translucent quality of the falling water! Very interesting translation of the name, too-

Artist Reply: This is not your standard waterfall, as you can see. There is not only the main cascade but several smaller ones falling from various heights. It is a lovely spectacal. I think the weather helped too. On this day it rained on and off. I went back on a sunny day and though I got some nice photos with rainbows the mood was completely different.

Artist Reply: And thank you for your comment, Thea. I like to add text to explain the story behind the photo.
