San Xavier del Bac Mission pastel

This is a painting I did of San Xavier del Bac Mission, near Tucson. It was build 2oo years ago. The outside is still under restoration, so fo now, I can only paint parts of it. I used an upward angle to focus on a window on the front of the mission. I used my wacom tablet & stylus pen (hooks up to computer) to paint this while looking at a photo I took for reference. Started with a blank canvas/screen, not a manipulated photo. I used airbrushes, pastels, and blending tools to create this look of a pastel work. Below is the photo I used as reference. I like to take my own photos if possible for stock photos for my art.

Dear Terry The photograph is superb! Sometimes it is better to let things be simple and speak for themselves. In summary, your photographic composition doesn't need any assistance. If I was to suggest anything, why don't you render it in B&W and see how that looks. regards John

Artist Reply: Thanks John! I did some B & W prints of the photo and loved the results. I will try to do this in a black and white work. Haven't played in mono color much for years, it will be a nice exercise for me. I am very ADHD and tend to pop from one subject, style as I think of it. It helps me as an artist to channel the energy productively. I had been thinking of doing more buildings as well. I have not done many of yet, but am gathering up reference photos to do in the future.

The reference photo is nice, but I must say that I prefer your painted version. Excellent work Terry!

Artist Reply: Thank you Angela! I haven't done too many buildings of any sort, and am going to start focusing on that area. I try to lstudy and learn different types of art so I am more rounded as an artist. I will go back to visit the mission again when the outside gets finished it's resoration next year. I could only see part of it, so looked for some detail areas to study.

Wow Awesome job. I have tried pastels, but can't get the hang of it. So stay with oils. (lol)

Artist Reply: Thanks Ralph! I haven tried oils, but some with pastels. I like with digital I could mix them all to create, and do blending or other effects for textures. This angle was due from me being short, and looking up at the interesting features of the building. I always have liked odd angled photos and works, so gave it a try. The nice thing about working in digital is I don't cover myself with my art medium or spill. I get more pastel on me than my work with traditional medium.

Hmmmm very nice photo...very interesting angle

Artist Reply: Thank you Tazda! An easy angle for me, I'm short and looking up to get a sense of height.
