This tree was alive until Hurricane Isabelle destroyed Hatteras Island a couple of years ago. Although it no longer bears leaves, it has since withstood numerous hurricanes and nor-easters. In the background, to the left of the sun, is the "breech", or the (filled-in) inlet that separated Hatteras Village from the rest of the island after Isabelle.
