Hoodoos

One of the famous attractions of the badlands of the Red Deer River in Alberta are the hoodoos of Rosedale, just south of Drumheller. I photographer them ten years ago and this time I wanted to try something different. Taking my time (and waiting for passing tourists) I walked about the hoodoos, studying them from different angles. I wanted something different from the standard postcard image. The darker material at the bottom is from when the area was part of an inland sea. When it gets wet, it's really slick and sticky. The upper lighter part is from when the area was a river delta. Sandstone rocks cap the top and prevent the clay pillar below from eroding. I used a polarizing filter to bring out the contrast between the blue sky and the white clouds.
