Light Break

I was standing on the edge of a cliff, just below the lookout fence, in an icy wind, waiting for the sunrise. After two mornings of disappointment, I was finally going to watch the sun come up in the Yellow Mountains (Huang Shan) of China. I watched the light in the western sky as the sun lit up the haze from the east. Then soft yellow/orange light flowed across the hazy air. The sun had come up, but I couldn't see it because it was right behind a jagged castle of rock. When the trees on the rock began to glow orange, I knew the sun was about to appear. I switched to a telephoto lens and was ready for the brief instant when the sun came up through the pines. Seconds later, the sun was over the trees and rock and the sky was too bright.
