Before the war, most soldiers were farmers (both North & South) but Northern professional careers also included - accountants, surveyors, locksmiths, teachers, carpenters, shoemakers, blacksmiths, painters & mechanics. Southerners, who hadn’t farmed, included merchants, machinists, lawyers, teachers, blacksmiths & dentists.
