Massasoit was the sachem (or chief) of the Wampanoags & had a peace treaty of mutual aid with the Plymouth colony that lasted as a model for 40 years. The colony governor Bradford declared a day of “Thanksgiving” & invited Massasoit, who arrived a day early with 90 Indians but didn’t come empty handed. They all brought 5 dressed deer & a dozen turkeys, then helped with the preparations.
