The Sandman

Golden Age hero dressed in dark clothing and a gasmask. I admit I like comic books. The escapism of it all, the different forms of writing and illustration simply captivates me. I'm particularly fond of heroes from "golden age." The heroes from the 40s and 50s which definitely seemed larger than life. They represent an evolution of social ideals and the like. My favorite of that era was the Sandman. He was a bit like Batman. Rich businessmen, very skilled and intelligent and used fear against his enemies. The difference between the 2 dark heroes was that Sandman has no mental problems such as Batman's OCD tendencies and the like. But the fact he willingly embraced the dark nature to hunt criminals is very interesting. I hired a model with the goal to recreate a cover of one the issues. I had purchased a burberry coat, fedora, vintage WW1 gas mask, a replic of a colt 1911 .45 automatic and a caulking gun. I stripped the gun and used an epoxy resin on the cannister of the caulking gun to fuse the gun's handle and the tube to make his 'gas gun.' After many hours of smudging, cloning, pixel by pixel painting, I finally came up with this image. To further enhance the mystic nature of the hero, I pasted that quote.
