At the time I was experimenting with using only one colour on canvas to develop monochromatic paintings through imagery and texture. What is interesting for me in this painting is that I didn't use any medium, the paint went directly from the tube onto the canvas. All the play of colour, and contrast of luminescence and darkness, therefore, comes from layering of the paint on or scraping it from the canvas.
